Last season we had more success in the YPU Exhibition than we have done for several years and it would be great if we
could keep up the momentum this year. During this season we had a presentation of the successful acceptances of both
digital and print entries at the 2021/22 Exhibition which provides a good impression of the standard of the Exhibition.
We are sure that there are many of our members who are quite capable of gaining acceptances and even awards in this
year's event.

Unfortunately our colour print competition does not occur until after the deadline so, if you are intending to enter the
same colour prints as for that competition you will need to print a second copy. Something for the committee to have a
look at for next year.

All entries to the YPU Exhibition need to be provided to Morris Gregory (YPS Print Secretary) for loading through the
YPU Portal. Documents have been circulated via email which provide information on the requirements for entry and forms
to be completed alongside the provision of your digital and print entries.

My Summer (Open Night)


Julie Cowdy ARPS is best described as a photoartist. Amongst her favourite subjects are flowers and still life, usually
photographed using fine art techniques. She is known for her composite images. After a career as a teacher of art, Julie
has become a self-taught photographer with an artistic eye and a creative mind.

"METAMORPHOSIS illustrates how Julie's style evolved when she set herself three challenges: to learn creative and
digital techniques, to gain an award recognising photographic merit and to be invited to hold an exhibition."

FROM A FRENCH MARKET TO THE SAATCHI continues Julie's creative photographic journey, from buying a plait of garlic, at
the start of an unplanned project, to becoming a RHS Silver medal winner for Botanical Photography.

From a French market to the Saatchi

Since COVID I have been working from home. I have been getting my exercise by cycling around the quiet fields and
villages south of York early morning or evening - always taking the camera. I have watched how the fields change over
the seasons and have captured this on camera.

I am also keen on “reading the landscape” both directly and via maps, I will talk about some of this within the talk -
with the aid of the Photographs. I believe that photography is more fun if you have knowledge of the subject that you
are taking.

My talk will focus on the area south of York centered on Copmanthorpe with Rufforth in the north, Tadcaster in the west,
Escrick in the east and Stillingfleet/Acaster Selby in the south.

The subjects will focus on the fieldscapes in spring/summer/Autumn including:

- Snowdrops
- Bluebells
- Rape fields
- Poppies
- Wheat & Barley
- My own favourite - potatoes.

There will be less fieldscapes in winter but will be supplemented by some night photography i.e. car trails, light
painting etc

Ian Beesley is an award winning and internationally acclaimed artist. His work has been exhibited nationally and
internationally including the Milan photo festival Italy, the International photography festival Shengyang, China, The
National Media Museum, Bradford, the Peoples History Museum Manchester and the London international art fair.

His work is held in the collections of the National Media Museum Bradford, The Royal Photographic Society, The V & A,
London, The Smithsonian Institute, Washington, the Imperial War Museum London, the National Museum of Labour, Helsinki,
amongst many other important collections.

He has published over 50 books.

In 2012 he was awarded the Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society.

He is currently artist in residence for the Bradford Institute for Health Research and recently received an honorary
doctorate from the University of Bradford for his significant contribution to art and culture and the social and
economic development of Bradford.

Never Underestimate an Old Woman with a Camera

Following Ian Beesley's recent talk, this is an outing to Salt's Mill to see his retrospective exhibition. We will have
time to play with our cameras around the mill, the canal, the streets of Saltaire village, a UNESCO world heritage site,
and the surrounding area.

Details as follows:

- Time: Leave the Poppleton Centre at 9:45am or meet in the exhibition around 11am.
- Car Park: There is free car parking at the mill.
- Cost: No charge for entry to Salt's mill or the exhibition.
- Food: There is a cafe in the mill serving hot food and drinks.
- Equipment: Camera. Waterproof coat. A tripod may be useful if you want to shoot the mill weir with a slow shutter or
  take photos inside the mill.

Rough timeline is:

- 11:00 - Meet in the Ian Beesley exhibition space.
- 11:00 to 12:00/12:30 - View Ian Beesley's exhibition plus art by David Hockney.
- 12:00/12:30 - Lunch
- Afternoon - Take photos.

We will play a video of the images given to us from YPU, and a good amount of time to discuss them amongst ourselves.

This outing offers an opportunity to photograph the abbey and formal gardens in autumn light and the abbey during the
evening coloured floodlights. The deer park offers autumn tree colours and red & roe deer. The Joe Cornish exhibition
also remains available until the 31st October 2022.

Rough timeline is:

- 12:00 - Meet in the quadrangle of the visitors centre.
- 12:15 - People self organise into groups and walk around the site.
- 15:30 - Meet at a location to regroup for those staying on for floodlights.
- 21:00 - End of floodlights, site closes at 21:30.

The mountains, forests and lakes of Northern India occupy one of the last great wilderness areas of Asia. Unspoilt and
wild, a truly irresistible destination for nature and photography. This talk showcases some of the incredible wildlife
found in this beautiful country.

Steve is an award-winning professional wildlife photographer based in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. He has been a keen
naturalist and photographer for over 30 years, lived on the Yorkshire Coast all of his life and believes there is no
better place for variety of habitats and amazing wildlife.

Inspired by the natural world around him Steve captures incredible wildlife images. In 2013 he was **“Commended”** in
the **“Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards”**, **“Big Picture USA - Natural World Photography Competition”** and
**“British Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards”** in which in 2015 he was **“Highly Commended”**. His work has been
published in national and regional media and magazines, leaflets, websites and publications. Steve has also been
featured on BBC Countryfile, Channel 4's Sunday Brunch, regional television programmes, and recently being a
researcher/location assistant on Channel 5's “Yorkshire | A Year in the Wild” series.

Steve previously worked for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds as Education Officer at Bempton Cliffs and has
taken part in numerous projects for the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, National Trust and other conservation organisations.
He also runs regular exhibitions, workshops, and delivers talks and lectures.

Steve is also a Director of Nature Tourism Company **“Yorkshire Coast Nature”** based in North Yorkshire, which delivers

Digital Projected Image Competition


Landscape photography is inspiring but unfortunately one often has to suffer for the art. The weather rarely plays
nicely and you have to either pack up and go home or batten down the waterproofs and crack on. I was looking forward to
Tony Worobiec's talk as he also takes photographs whatever the weather. I hope to show that being out in the rain or
searing heat provides plenty of opportunities to the landscaper. I shall also look at why and how to take black and
white landscape photographs as there are lots of different techniques to reach the end result. Black and white
photographs can be a lot more dramatic than colour as they can be pushed a lot harder in post processing. I hope to give
you a few ideas of the possibilities available.

After moving to rural Yorkshire, stories of Lucy's village community soon began to unfold - the ordinary, the universal,
the everyday threads of our interwoven lives. Long inspired by the work of James Ravilious, Lucy knew that she wanted to
document the place, its people, and this sense of rootedness. After all, it is “how we live our days that makes our
life” (Annie Dillard). Ford of the Sorrel spans ten years of life in a Yorkshire village and was published by Bluecoat
Press in November 2021. "The layers of connection through the community and within its extended families started to
reveal themselves: who lived where, or farmed which field; whose sheep grazed by the old mill; who might be going where,
when and sometimes why. The more I noticed, the more absorbed I became with the evolving stories of interwoven lives;
the powerful sense of belonging created between the people and the land, and through knowing and being known to each
other. I felt compelled to photograph, as far as it is possible, the rootedness of these people in this place as it is
today - and may not be tomorrow." Lucy Saggers

Born in Rotherham, Chris has always lived in the Yorkshire region and currently lives in York. In June 2010 he became an
Associate of the Royal Photographic Society. He is an award winning photographer at both national and international
level. Chris has also won awards for his talks on photography, which he delivers at societies throughout the region.

Inspired by the regions' exhilarating natural views; from the flower-strewn meadows and stone built barns of the
Yorkshire Dales & the heather filled North York Moors, to the cliff laden beauty of Yorkshire's Heritage Coast, he
strives to capture natural light to bring his images to life and capture the essence of each location. He has also
compiled a powerful portfolio from the Lake District, Northumberland, Scotland, London and, more recently, Venice,
Prague and Rome.

The composition talk tries to break down the image making process and looks at various ways in which a photograph can be
created, using some simple ideas, or maybe a couple of more abstract ones. Chris uses a lot of his own photography
throughout the talk so there is plenty for everyone.

out.

Justin Garner is a freelance photographer from the north west covering a variety of subjects. Natural history being one
of his favourites he also has a passion for studio work crafting light on subjects.

Macro photography talk covers Justin's journey in the small world. The talk shows how Justin goes about photographing
flowers, bugs and mushrooms revealing behind the scene images that help people understand his process in getting the
images. The talk also goes into detail the subject of focus stacking which is a big part of the work he produces.

Mono Print Competition


Erica has had a keen interest in photography since the late 1990's, originally working exclusively in colour slides
before moving into digital photography relatively late compared to many. She is a member of Sheffield Photographic
Society, Gamma Photoforum and the London Salon of Photography, and also an active camera club lecturer and a PAGB
accredited judge. Her photography is mostly centred around landscape, pictorial and street photography.

This talk, The View From Here, is about making the most of limited time for photography. Erica enjoys the challenge of
finding less obvious subjects and compositions to make images which are a bit different in relatively 'everyday'
situations and places. She likes to use her photography to make a personal interpretation of 'whatever is in front of
me', using colour, movement, light, shape, composition and simplicity to their best advantage. She particularly likes
finding images which tell a story, convey a mood, ask a question or otherwise make you think.

This outing offers an opportunity to photograph the hall and gardens in late winter with snowdrops and other early flora on show

Presentations from two of our most esteemed members on their travels to Glasgow and a few other locations.
Unfortunately, Harry is unable to make it anymore so Morris will do his best to cover.

Both presentation will be concerned with the variety of photo opportunities presented over the space of 5 days in
Glasgow. This will range from the Glasgow Pride event through other forms of street photography to architectural and
abstract images.

As a complete contrast, and with time permitting, Morris will show a few holiday snaps from his visit to the brazilian
pantanal. This will feature the wildlife of the area including birds, caiman , ocelot and the main subject of the tour,
jaguars. Harry may show some photographs taken in winter in Glencoe, again when Morris and he spent a week there.


5 Days in Glasgow

Vic is a new member this season. He retired from general dental practice 13 years ago and took up photography as a
hobby. The Galapagos has been on his bucket list and he was able to travel there last April. The trip wasn't centred
around photography so the images were taken on the various trips ashore.

The Wider World of Photography Part 1

The Last 12 months of Nature, Landscape and Macro Photography

Having been an amateur photographer since my teens, when I retired from a public service career in my early 50's, I went
to live in France to explore the possibility of becoming a professional photographer. Once there I was fortunate to meet
and become friends with a recently retired pro photographer who mentored me in the craft and we had many joint
exhibitions around South West France. I returned to the UK permanently in 2008 and began photographing musicians, gigs,
festivals and products. Around 2014 I began to concentrate on landscape and have travelled to Scandinavia and Iceland,
in addition to Europe and around the north of the UK.

My presentation, "Scandinavia - A Personal Impression" is a mixture of photography and video clips. Over the past couple
of years I have spent more and more time developing my skills in videography and find moving images absolutely absorbing
but extremely time consuming!

Having spent a total of seven months in the past four years travelling around Scandinavia in my camper van, my
presentation will include images from all of the Nordic countries and I look forward to showing this collection for the
first time at YPS.

Once matters are swiftly concluded, members are welcome to stay around and socialise in the room or the bar.

July 2023. Over 120 prints from members will be on display in the historic 16th-century Tithe Barn, including a
selection of awarded images at the YPU annual exhibition.

I'll aim to share my approach, and thoughts regarding landscape photography composition and the importance of
experimentation. As the talk details all my own experiences, I'll also be talking about the many and varied mistakes I
made along the way, and how I (hopefully) learned and became a better photographer because of them.

Having run a photography business now since 2007, and spending twenty years or so working as an engineer, I finally made
the daunting decision to go full time with photography back in February 2015. I have run a busy schedule of landscape
photography workshops since 2012, mainly from my home county of Yorkshire, but also occasionally to locations further
afield. My work is on sale via the stock library, Alamy and I also supply prints on various media to both private and
commercial clients. A selection of my framed prints are also on display at a handful of cafes and galleries, in and
around the Yorkshire Dales national Park.

When we first pick up a camera our main aim is usually to master the settings and how to effectively compose a
photograph. Once these techniques have been mastered, many will settle into a comfort zone, following the same processes
over and over again, soon becoming frustrated and getting stuck in a creative rut. There is so much more to discover
about photography and this talk is a window into how we can tap into it.

In this talk I explore an extensive world of hidden powers and powerful techniques we often take for granted. I also
delve into the psychology of photography and try to bridge the gap between photography as an enjoyable hobby and
photography as an art of expression.

Whilst the majority of Chris's work is in colour, his photographic journey started with black and white. Chris will
never forget the magic of seeing those prints appear in the developing tray. In these digital days Chris is increasingly
drawn towards the simple beauty of monochrome which strips away the confusion of colour and asks us to appreciate the
light, tone, texture and detail in our images.

Chris is a professional Travel & Landscape photographer, workshop leader and lecturer based in Nottinghamshire (UK). He
is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society and is proud to have been a brand ambassador for Fujifilm for over
eight years. Chris has received awards in national photographic competitions and has twice been commissioned to
photograph in Thailand on behalf of the Tourism Authority of Thailand. His images are represented by several
international stock agencies and clients have used them worldwide across many different sectors.

Les has been in and around the camera club scene for twenty years and his work over those years has varied but a
constant has always been architecture which is now his main focus. Although he lives in the stunning Yorkshire Dales the
majority of work is carried out abroad as he seeks out the different and unusual in contemporary architecture. Les's
work has featured in various publications and won several awards over the years the latest was winning the architectural
photographer of the year at the 2022 British Photography Awards.

Zaha Hadid once said architecture should make you think, which is what my presentation hopefully will do, it focuses on
the contemporary style of architecture in various European cities. The friends element are those older buildings that
warrant an inclusion because they have stood the test of time and are so photogenic. There's a variety of images in my
soft colour style, some a little more vibrant and others in monochrome, the how and why are explained throughout the
evening which are called “bite size info” all explained in a non technical way.

I stated photography over 40 years ago exchanging a fiancé for a camera for exchange. Since then, I've been a member of
Huddersfield Camera Club, Normanton, Harrogate and Leeds finally last year returning to Huddersfield Photo Imaging Club.
In the mid 1990s I enrolled at Huddersfield College undertaking several darkroom modules gaining my City and Guilds in
Photography and my LRPS. In 2010 was award a first-class honours degree in photography and my ARPS. I have
unsuccessfully attempted the RPS fellowship, but it wasn't meant to be. My passion for photography is just as strong and
I try to immerse myself on a day bases.

I am honorary treasurer and President elect of Yorkshire Photographic Union

The lecture will cover a brief overview of camera equipment required, camera settings and the relationship between ISO,
F stop and Bulb mode. The importance of focus peaking as an aid for accurate focusing. And clothing

For light painting I will bring along a few torches and a wide variety acrylic tool, used in the manipulation of light.
These will range from various shaped acrylic blades to different lengths of flexible tubes and crystal pen writers.

The lecture is intended as a practical evening encouraging members to have go, so please bring along your camera and
tripod.

John Bolloten is a documentary photographer based in Bradford, UK. His work primarily focuses on documenting people and
subcultures that exist on the margins of society. Although, he has worked and continues to work on a number of different
projects, it is his five years of work with heroin and crack users that he is best known for. His book “Nothing To See
Here” (2017) opened a window into Bradford's gritty underbelly of drug and alcohol addiction, homelessness and vice. A
second book, “Love Story” (2019) was a very intimate reportage into the lives of Gary and Maree, a drug-using couple. A
book, “This is Not a Life, It’s Just an Existence”, which covers all his work with drug users and will feature eighteen
life stories is due to be published in the autumn of 2023.

Other books by John include “Bradford Street” (2014), “Belgrade” (2015), “Shabash” (2016), “Field of Broken Dreams”
(2018), “Gladiators” (2020) and “Margins” (2021), North Guerillas (2022) and "Words are Weapons (2023).

John is currently working on a number of long-term projects including bare knuckle pit fighting, the northern grime and
drill music scenes, and football hooligans in Georgia.

I will talk about a few of my projects including my work with drug users and bare knuckle pit fighting.

Justin Garner is a freelance photographer from the north west covering a variety of subjects. Natural history being one
of his favourites he also has a passion for studio work crafting light on subjects.

This is a lecture on the history of HDR photography and Justin's approach to creating High Dynamic Range images. He
speaks about the things he looks for and the techniques used. Taking in landscape and vehicles.

Image Critique


Lesley specialises in abstract digital art, creating stunning images, often using images taken on her phone. She was
awarded the LRPS in 2019 and the APRS in 2020 for her experimental 'Parallel Lives' series, featuring street scenes and
architecture created on her iPhone using the Photosplit App.

Lesley started as a landscape photographer and slips effortlessly between abstract and more traditional photography. She
will share her artistic evolution with us.

According to Lesley, “I have a passion for photography and spend most of my spare time taking pictures, downloading and
working on them….. I love making images of landscapes, abstracts or whatever catches my eye.”

Lesley has had exhibitions in York, her work has been shown in Nottingham, the Lake District and the RPS Landscape Group
outdoor exhibition. Other exhibitions coming up this year include The City Screen in York and the Edinburgh Photographic
Society.

Photography has changed my life and I live to create. I believe my enthusiasm and passion for Photography shown within
my work and videography needs to be shared and to hopefully inspire others. I work so hard to build a positive community
with my facebook group Let's Create and my meetups / workshops to bring people together and continue to inspire others.
For my own personal reasons, photography is a spiritual and wonderful way to keep myself connected to nature and express
myself via this amazing medium. From the age of six photography has always been with me but took me along time to
realise its all I want to do. 5 years ago I started the content creator road on Youtube making predominately Landscape
Photography videos and the success of this has given me the momentum to start printing my own work and run my own
website and podcasts. My photography can be quite eclectic and I love to experiment, play and express myself from camera
to the final image. I hope you will join me on the talk and enjoy my passion for photography.

The talk - This talk is based on my learning and growth in photography from lock down and the following 2 years. Over a
80 images in the book, An-stapa, and a deeper look and talk about that time and what the images mean to me and the ways
in which I created them. Also a look into my YouTube channel and podcast that I create, owning full time and balancing
this with family to follow my love and obsession with photography.

A specialist wildlife photographic guide, an avid ethologist, with a keen passion for conservation and the natural
world, I endeavour to impart this in my photography as well as in those who join me on safari.

Working as a wildlife photography guide is a huge privilege, it means you can share your passion and enthusiasm -
inviting people into a world you care so fervently about. It allows you to showcase, first hand how remarkable the
natural world around us is and its fragile intricacies.

The ethos behind my guiding and the journeys I curate is pretty straightforward and dedicated. I want you to have the
best possible experience, giving you the maximum opportunity to witness and experience astounding nature, connecting
with it in your own way. This is just one of the reasons why I'd love you to join me on a wildlife adventure.

Having fallen in love with wildlife at an early age and taking the plunge from the corporate world; I trained, qualified
and worked as a professional Field Guide in various game reserves around Southern Africa, including the world renowned
Sabi Sands - I've also led multiple private safaris journeys to Southern and Eastern Africa.

Using my experience and understanding of wildlife behaviour, I want to show more than just a picture. Rather, letting
each image tell its own story, bringing alive details, fleeting moments and emotion which emphasise a subject or a story
unfolding before me.

This is what I want to inspire in those who join me on safari; encouraging them to connect with their subjects and the
natural world personally. Meaning you portray a tale of each image, sharing your story with your audience, in your own
way.

The three pieces of advice I could give anyone wishing to explore wildlife photography…

Get to know your subjects and spend as much time with them as possible.

Keep things simple but also but also experiment with your creativity.

Be persistent, keep pushing yourself. Becoming better doesn't happen overnight and without practice.

Photography is a journey, it takes you to astounding places and help you notice and appreciate things that other people
might miss. I see the most amazing things and meet the most wonderful people, I'm lucky to do this and I look forward to
sharing it with you.

Leatt Cup Competition


I have been a photographer (well I had a camera) for over 30 years but have only started to take it more seriously in
the last 12 years or so. I used to wander off into the countryside and take thoroughly average landscapes until a
pivotal piece of critique headed my way. Since then, I have enveloped myself firstly in Nature photography and, more
recently, in photographing people both in studio environments and also at large. I am currently an active member of both
Ribblesdale CC and Chorley PS. I am a firm believer in 'getting it right in camera' but also on processing images to get
the very best from them.

Power and Poise is a digital presentation concentrating on capturing and implying movement using sports and dance
images. Both disciplines have their own unique aspects but there is a strong overlap too as they both rely on the
physical side and style/form that make them so photogenic. I will talk about the technical aspects of shooting these
genres whilst sharing images and some of the ideas that led up to me taking them.
